The increase in population and expansion of Metropolitan Melbourne has caused an upsurge in service tunnel and shaft construction. The Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works has been recently engaged in the construction of large amplification schemes for both sewerage and water supply, involving many miles of tunnels in both rock and soft ground. In the construction of these tunnels the Board has used a number of modern techniques including tunnelling machines and various methods of ground stabilisation. The methods, although already used overseas, have been specially developed for the particular conditions in Melbourne and include the patented modification of a rock tunnelling machine to suit fractured rock, the use of soft ground machines including a free-arm machine and the use of ground freezing. These methods have been successful and have enabled the Board to achieve economy and increased tunnel production and have reduced the disturbance to residents from the construction process.
