- Abstract
This paper collects and analyses the results of a large number of measurements made in Europe, the United States of America, and Australia, of the intensities of ground and sky rays at frequencies and distances commonly used in radio broadcasting. A discussion of what constitutes a satisfactory broadcasting service involves the consideration of the degree of fading and distortion which can be tolerated and of the level of interference due to thunderstorms and man-made static. Calculations of the power required at the transmitting station to deliver a noise-free service within the non-fading zone lead to the conclusion that higher efficiency is obtained by using frequencies of about 500 kilocycles per sec. than either higher or lower frequencies. In daylight rural services, however, the optimum frequency is lower than 500 kc./s. when the distance to be covered is greater than 50 miles. A summary of the conclusions derived from this study of broadcasting services is given in Section 5 of the paper.
