- Abstract
AUSTRALIAN RED CROSS SOCIETY
This book, which is a history of the Blood Transfusion Service in Victoria, covers by chance a period which coincides with my professional life, a period which has seen a very great advance in the technical employment of blood transfusion and in the range of surgery available to the community largely because of this technical advance.
Blood Transfusion is one of the services of which Red Cross is most proud, and for which it is best known in Australia. The Society has been very fortunate in the calibre of the medical officers that have been attracted to serve it in this field, but none has given such outstanding service to the Society, and the community, as Lucy Bryce.
Victoria pioneered the first Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service in Australia, and this was started by Dr Bryce, who from the beginning saw the value of identifying this new community service, a service whose motives were of necessity so unselfish, with the great Red Cross movement.
There is no-one therefore better qualified to write a history of the Service in Victoria both from the Red Cross and from the medical point of view, than Dr Bryce. The Red Cross is very grateful to her for putting history on record in this way, and on behalf of the Society I wish this book every success.
GEOFFREY NEWMAN-MORRIS,
