- Abstract
The paper discusses the deformation capacity of stocky steel beams and beam-columns. The basic factors determining deformation capacity are discussed and theories are presented which allow it to be quantitatively predicted. It is shown that a correct understanding of the post-elastic behaviour of steel beams requires an examination of three apparent paradoxes which arise if existing theories are used. The explanation of these paradoxes requires an appreciation of the yielding process in structural steel, and several applications of a discontinuous yielding theory are given in the paper.
