- Abstract
The possibility of using plastic theory methods in the design of statically indeterminate triangulated steel frameworks is investigated in this paper. The difficulties of ensuring satisfactory behaviour of compression members are described and methods of overcoming these difficulties by reinforcement or pre-stressing are put forward.
An experimental investigation into the behaviour of two-span continuous open-web joists in which reinforcement and pre-stressing were used to control the collapse mechanism is described. It is concluded that behaviour suitable for the application of plastic theory' methods can be obtained by either of these methods. The advantages achieved with the adoption of plastic theory for rigidly jointed frames and beams can therefore also be achieved with certain types of triangulated frameworks.
