Description

Paper No.2043, presented before the Engineering Conference, 1966, in Newcastle from 21st to 25th March 1966.

The author, Kenneth Bruce Gosbell, BCE StudIEAust, is an engineer in the Structural Design Section of the Commonwealth Department of Works, Head Office, Melbourne.

Abstract

This paper outlines a scheme for extending the North-South runway at Sydney (Kingsford-Smith) Airport, into Botany Bay. Because the runway extension will cross an existing arterial highway, a vehicular tunnel will be required to take road traffic beneath the runway. A number of proposals for this structure were investigated in order to ascertain the most efficient and economical structural system. With regard to the load-carrying deck forming the roof of the tunnel, a programme of model analysis was carried out to enable a more accurate assessment of one particular system to be made.
The final design of the tunnel, which is now under construction, is described outlining briefly the details of the integrated services.
