Abstract

The aim of this paper is to demonstrate how the Engineering Management function is being carried out on the Bougainville Copper Project.
A general description of the project is provided and it is shown in a general concept how any large mining project develops from early exploration activities, through what is termed the development phase, to start-up of operations. The sequence of events leading up to the present stage of the Bougainville Project are then presented for comparison to provide an understanding of how the actual situation has affected the engineering management function.
The nature of the project and the particular conditions under which the project is being developed are described to show the situation requiring management control. The main methods of achieving that control are delineated.
Many of the normal problems associated with the development of large projects are magnified on this project. How some of these problems were handled is shown, so that benefits of experience may be shared.
The conclusion provides some suggestions as to what may be considered key factors in the successful development of similar large projects.
