Abstract

This paper describes current developments in the design of artificial limbs and corrective devices with due emphasis on the importance of physiological and psychological factors affecting their acceptance or rejection by the amputee. Coverage of upper limbs includes both internally and externally powered devices and their practical limitations. Treatment of the lower limb stresses the importance played in the rehabilitation of the amputee by the forces of gravity, and explains how these forces are being harnessed by the use of mechanical and fluid controls. The management of extreme disabilities is also described with special reference to the latest local and overseas developments in this field. Technical difficulties associated with the relatively small amputee population in Australia are viewed through the eyes of the designer.
The paper follows with a brief description of the more important trends, e.g. modular approach to limb production, pneumatic knee mechanisms, etc., and concludes with an appeal for greater involvement of the engineering community at large with what are essentially human engineering problems.
