Abstract

Tumut 1 and Tumut 2 projects of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Authority are located on the Upper Tumut river and were completed in 1959 and 1962, respectively. The steel- and concrete-lined twin pressure shafts of both projects were designed to withstand internal and external water pressure.
Instruments were installed in one pressure shaft at each project to determine the behaviour of the steel lining and for comparison with design assumptions. These instruments measured the strains and temperatures of the steel lining and the pressure and temperature of the groundwater.
A model of the Tumut 1 bottom bifurcate and the installed bifurcates at Tumut 2 were pressure-tested to check the designs.
This paper describes the design methods adopted and discusses the instrument readings. The conclusion is reached that the concrete-rock surround of the pressure shafts gives adequate support to the steel liner, that the external pressure was lower than expected and that the usual design methods for bifurcates do not take sufficient account of the complexity
of the structure.
