This paper, No.1138, originated in the Sydney Division of The Institution and was presented before a General Meeting of the Civil Engineering Branch of the Division on 28th April, 1953.

- Abstract
This paper covers technical problems associated with the design of concrete mixes to produce a quality product from commercially available materials. It is contended that the usual procedure of endeavouring to procure selected materials with predetermined aggregate gradings to approximate some theoretical mix design requirement, is both unnecessary and uneconomical.
The problem is traced through the stages from structural design to mix design, and the application of statistical analysis is presented as applicable to central batching and mixing plants. Methods for designing mixes to meet a variety of conditions as essential to the flexibility of commercial plants, are outlined. The paper concludes with a survey of material, batching, and testing variables which must be controlled in order to secure quality concrete.
