Abstract

This paper deals with the theoretical and experimental background to the structural provisions of the S.A.A. Brickwork Code AS CA47-1969.
As a preliminary to this, brickwork construction is placed in its historical setting, and the principal structural features of modern load-bearing brick structures are described.
Much of the paper is devoted to the most important property of load-bearing brickwork, the permissible compressive stress as it is affected by brick and mortar strength, slenderness ratio, eccentricity of load, joints, concentrated loads and other factors; to the permissible tensile and shear stresses; to the increase in stresses allowed for transient or temporary loads; to the stresses caused by differential expansion or contraction: and to the question of overall stability.
How the effective eccentricity of vertical load in walls and piers may be estimated, and structural analysis for lateral loads, are matters important to the designer, and receive some discussion.
Reference is made throughout to the guidance received from a study of other Codes. The paper concludes with a list of problems which, in the writer's opinion, require further research before they can be regarded as solved.
