Abstract

This work has been carried out as a part of an investigation sponsored jointly by the Column Research Council, the Pennsylvania Department of Highways, the U.S. Department of Commerce-Bureau of Public Roads, the National Science Foundation, the United States Steel Corporation and its National Tube Division, and the American Institute of Steel Construction. The paper describes the recent developments in the study of the strength of simple pinned-end columns of structural steel. Particular attention is given to the strength of welded columns and it is shown that some precautions may be needed in their use.
