- Abstract
The unusual properties of matter in its fourth or plasma state provide a challenge to engineers to produce many new devices and processes which are unattainable at lower temperatures. In this paper, the nature and properties of the plasma state are described and some examples given of developments taking place in this exciting new field. These can be conveniently grouped into three different plasma categories, static, dynamic and transient, depending upon the plasma preparation method adopted, the likely duration of the plasma and the particular application in mind.
The interdisciplinary nature of the subject is stressed since it is bringing together engineers and scientists working in areas such as gaseous electronics, arc and circuit breaker technology, magnetohydrodynamics, plasma chemistry and in particular thermonuclear fusion. Brief consideration is given to the type of undergraduate and graduate courses of study suitable as preparation for engineers who wish to work in this field.
