- Abstract
This paper discusses advantages of an experimental model power system as a research tool for exploring abnormal power system behaviour and the use of advanced analogue and digital control techniques. An outline of the history and philosophy of model power systems is given and the specific system which has been developed at the University of Sydney is described in some detail. New types of thyristor exciters and D.C. motor-model turbine drives are described together with an assessment of their performance characteristics; and an electrical technique for accurate speed measurement, is also given. The results of several experimental research studies using the model system are summarised. These include steady state stability and transient stability experiments with active excitation and governor control; and the sub-optimal bang-bang control of series braking and shunt damping resistors under fault and post-fault conditions.
