- Abstract
The first part of this paper presents a rational theory of the velocity of fall or settling velocity of aggregations of discrete particles,(or "suspensions ") settling in still liquids. The paper then describes a series of experiments on the settling of suspensions of alum and lime hydroxide flocs such as are formed in water treatment processes. The second part of the paper shows that a suspension held stationary in an upflow is the same phenomenon as a suspension settling in a still liquid, the nominal upflow velocity and the settling velocity being equal and opposite. Finally, the paper discusses the safe limits of upflow velocity for hydroxide floc suspensions and the best shape for an upflow zone.
