Abstract

Some aspects of the formation and distribution of the soils of Australia are discussed. The agricultural potential of the country, as related to the soil factor, is described briefly. Reference is made to the engineer's concept of soil and it is shown that the basic studies of soils for the differing requirements of agricultural development and engineering construction are not incompatible. The engineer's role in soil conservation is outlined and it is suggested that there is some need for caution in disturbing the ecological balance of any area. The paper concludes with a comment on the desirability of professional training in Agricultural Engineering.
