Abstract

This paper describes some of the considerations involved in the design and development of the electronic systems needed to support the launching of the Satellite Launching Vehicle at Woomera, South Australia, on behalf of the European Launcher Development Organisation.
The first part of the paper-deals with the various control, monitoring and alarm systems which form part of the ground support system. The design of the cable network is also included as it is by careful attention to this aspect of the installation that otherwise separate systems can be inter-connected and thereby inter-related for effective use.
The second part describes the design considerations involved in the engineering aspects of the ground support system related particularly to safety. The different systems controlling and monitoring hazardous operations in and around the rocket vehicle are subjected to special consideration to achieve the maximum degree of reliability compatible with safe operation.
