Abstract

From Adobe AI assistant:
"This document outlines the history and development of the RACI Physical Chemistry Division from its inception in 1974 to its current status. Early Development of the RACI Physical Chemistry Division Prior to 1974, physical chemistry was represented within RACI through various branches and groups, often overlapping with other divisions. The formation of the Physical Chemistry Division was driven by the need to consolidate interests and avoid duplication with existing divisions.

The inaugural meeting occurred during the 5th National Convention at ANU in May 1974, featuring a symposium on "The Physical Chemistry of Fluids." Key Conferences and Activities The division's vitality is marked by its organization of topical conferences, including the stand-alone series on Chemical Reaction Dynamics (1983-present) and the Australian Conference on Physical Chemistry (1995-present). Participation in national conventions, such as the 7th National Convention in 1982, facilitated collaboration with other divisions and highlighted key topics like chemical rate processes.

The division has also supported student engagement through the Student Conference on Physical Chemistry, initiated in 1999. Leadership and Future Directions A succession of chairs has guided the division, starting with Reg Mills (1974-76) and continuing through various leaders up to the present. The document concludes with reflections on the division's achievements and considerations for future growth and direction within the RACI framework."
