Extracts from Chairman's Address by J. A. Laing, MCE MIEAust, to the Melbourne Division of The Institution, 21st April, 1936.

Abstract

In the past a great deal of attention has been given to the design of roofs, because of their great importance, and certain difficulties of design and, further, much discussion has taken place regarding the actual wind loads to be provided for. It is not proposed, however, to go into the question of the loading roofs have to withstand, but only the manner of supporting the loads, which are assumed to have been already determined. However, in this regard, attention is called to a paper on wind pressures by E. B. Richardson and B. H. Miller. The almost universal method of supporting a roof is by means of a system of transverse framing, which transfers the vertical and lateral forces acting on the roof entirely to the side supporting walls of the building. It will be the purpose of this paper to endeavour to show, that for many types of roof, this system is not the best, because the avoidance of trouble, and the provision of a proper factor of stability, are expensive in some cases, while in others, a better and more economical structure is obtainable by adopting the system herein proposed.
