- Abstract
ln the following paper, brief mention is made of the nature of electrolysis of sub-surface structures, and the conditions bringing it about. This is followed by a discussion of field surveys, the nature of the results obtained, and to what extent the observed phenomena can be used as an estimation of damage. A few remarks are made about instruments for use in the field, and in particular of a slow speed oscillograph adapted by the author to this work. Mitigative measures are then critically discussed. The importance of protective coatings for steel mains is stressed, and the apparent failure of insulating joints is noted. The briefest reference is made to legal and economic aspects, and a tabulated list of regulations in force in various countries is included. The paper concludes with a necessarily incomplete, but sufficiently comprehensive, list of references.
