Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to review, generally, the long line system, both telephone and telegraph, in Australia, and to touch very briefly on its past history and growth. It is intended to outline the problems associated with the system in its present stage and to describe the development of plant used. Finally, a brief description will be given of the more important services which the system provides, together with a number of statistics indicating its growth and present size. An endeavour has been made to present a picture which will enable the engineer engaged in other branches of the profession to visualise the system and the manner in which the problems are being met, rather than to discuss the matter in its more technical aspects.
