Abstract

When a bank of single-phase transformers, or a three-phase shell-type transformer, has primaries star-connected to a three-phase mains supply, useful amounts of third-harmonic energy may be delivered to a load connected between the star-point and neutral, or to a load connected in series with delta-connected secondary windings; the two load connections are equivalent except in regard to winding losses. Distortion of the 150-cycle output voltage waveform is negligible when a simple filter is connected across the load. Utilisation of this filter to provide a capacitive reactance at 150 c/s, in parallel with the load, results in an increase in useful output power. A saturable reactor may be added to form a ferro-resonant circuit which provides a capactive reactance, at 150-cycles, which increases automatically as the load voltage decreases, resulting in improved regulation of the output voltage with load variations and with input-voltage variations. This improvement is particularly noticeable for low power factor loads. The arrangement described provides an economical 150-cycle generator, with fairly satisfactory characteristics for laboratory and general testing.
