- Abstract
This year marks the Emerald anniversary of Australia's offshore oil and gas industry. It was 55 years ago that this multi-billion-dollar industry was born with the discovery of the first offshore field in our nation's first offshore exploration well. The significance of this birth, and the resources boom that followed, is well known. What's not well known is that there was a leading Melbourne obstetrician assisting at the birth.
To be historically correct, he was a medical student at the time on his journey to becoming an obstetrician-gynaecologist. Over half a century later, after helping to bring more than 15,000 Australians into the world - along with a number of Britons and Americans - Dr Anthony (Tony) Krins, FRANZCOG, has
decided to retire from clinical practice. He had planned to continue teaching medical students, but this has been prevented by the COVID-19 pandemic.
