The examinations of the Institution have drawn attention, inter alia to the deficiency in knowledge, on the part of candidates, of the theory of Quantity Calculations, especially in the case of earthworks by cross sections. By courtesy of the Institution of Surveyors, N.S.W., this paper, originally published in "The Australian Surveyor", Vol. 1, No.7, October, 1929, is reproduced for the information and guidance of younger members of the Institution who may be interested, there being an absence of satisfactory treatment of the subject in available text books.
