Abstract

The gas turbine has been known to industry for many years, mainly as an adjunct to boiler equipment and petroleum refining plant, but it is only during recent years that its true possibilities have come to be realised. The reason is that, following its successful application to aircraft propulsion during World War II and the accompanying improvement in the mechanical and aerodynamic operation of the engine components, the gas turbine has been transformed from an engine of low thermal efficiency and dubious dependability to one which is already challenging well established prime movers in many applications.
