Description

Retiring President's address by J. D. Leach, CBE BE MIEAust, to the forty-fifth Annual General Meeting of The Institution of Engineers. Australia, at Perth on 8th April, 1965.

Abstract

This address explores the critical role of engineers in advancing Australia's infrastructure and resource development. It highlights transformative changes in road transport since World War I, emphasizing the need for innovative engineering approaches to address evolving challenges. Adding to the author's previous paper on the history of the road systems of Western Australia, the valuable role of the Conference of State Road Authorities of Australia (COSRAA) / National Association of Australian State Road Authorities (NAASRA) is noted. Recent significant engineering projects across Australia are reviewed, including road construction, port developments, irrigation systems, hydro-electric power stations, and steel industry expansions. In particular, the importance of imaginative thinking, collaboration among professionals, and the many contributions of engineers in Divisional and Headquarters Groups to national development is highlighted.
