- Abstract
This paper reports on an investigation into the effect of holes in flat plate slabs. The results of the investigation show that current Code rules are reasonable for slabs for which the ratio of column to span is equal to or larger than one sixteenth. Provided the size and locations of holes conform to the Code rules, the structural behaviour of the flat plate slab is not significantly altered.
However, if Code rules are to be applied generally, the wording of the rules should be amended to ensure that holes wider than the width of the column face are forbidden close to the column. Such holes have a severe effect on the performance of the flat plate slab.
