- Abstract
The Equivalent Frame Method is a well-established procedure for the analysis of monolithic buildings, it is a valid concept for beam-slab structures. Despite Code rules, there is no universal agreement on the basic data for this method. This paper compares five sets of analyses of a typical building using some existing data as well as information derived from the author's investigation into beam-slab floors. It seems that existing equivalent beams can lead to satisfactory predictions of bending moments provided the appropriate beams and loadings are matched. The author presents data for an equivalent beam suitable for all types of loading. The evaluation of beam stiffness, by the proposed rules, is considered to be simpler than is presently the case. Rules are also presented for the evaluation of initial joint moments. These values, particularly in the case of UDL on slabs, properly account for the twist of the transverse support, and so avoid the use of artificial devices such as equivalent columns.
