The paper describes the genesis of organized building research in Australia in 1944, and traces its development through several Commonwealth bodies, including the Commonwealth Experimental Building Station of the Department of Works and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization. The various spheres of interest of these organizations are illustrated by descriptions of research work in progress and by examples of their contributions to technical improvements and economy in building practice.
