Abstract

"Though Pell was the first Professor of Mathematics at Sydney University and retained that position for almost twenty-five years, till shortly before his death, the actual record of his work there is very scanty, and this note must therefore deal principally with his achievement in other fields."

Around 1852. . . "About this time the arrangements for the establishment of Sydney University had so far advanced that a committee of four, in England, headed by Sir John F. W. Herschel, was instructed to select professors for the three original chairs of classics, chemistry, and mathematics. Out of twenty-six candidates for the last, Pell was selected, his colleagues being Dr. Woolley and Professor Smith. Pell and Smith sailed in the same boat for Australia, reaching Sydney on July 9, 1852. It was not long after his arrival that he entered on actuarial labours (life assurance mathematics). In the sixth Annual Report of the Australian Mutual Provident Society, presented on January 30, 1855. . ."
