This paper, No.376, originated in the Adelaide Division of the Institution.

Abstract

The paper deals with the evolution of the "separate digestion method" of treating sewage sludge from about 1912 to the present date, laying stress on what has been done both in the laboratory and in the field to control and hasten up the process.
The following phases of the subject are dealt with :-
(1) Lagooning ; (2) Digestion in open tanks ; (3) Hydrogen ion (pH) control; together with pH determination ; (4) Temperature control, methods of heating tanks, collection and use of gas, etc.; (5) Mechanical stirring, sludge collection and scum breaking; (6) Two stage digestion; (7) Thermophilic digestion; and (8) Drying and disposal of digested sludge.
