- Abstract
The key to developing the River Murray trade was the route to Adelaide. Goods were taken to Goolwa, by rail to Victor Harbor, and by coastal vessel to Port Adelaide. A direct overland route east through Gumeracha to the city was some time coming and involved a number of interesting bridges ranging from the uniquely South Australian laminated timber construction to an elegant reinforced concrete bridge design by Sir John Monash's local company. Of particular interest are the concrete-encased steel lattice bridges designed by Daniel Fleming, the Engineer for Roads and Bridges who later became South Australia's first Commissioner of Highways. Many of the early bridges are still in service today.
