- Abstract
Unbeknown by most people passing through Mannum, at the bottom of a excavation between the main street and River Murray at the north edge of the town is the only dry dock on the Murray-Darling River system as well as the only example in South Australia (see Figure 1). This timber structure is of considerable significance to the story of the development of the Australian inland through the evolution of the transport industry based on the river system, as well as being symbolic of the ingenuity of its pioneers. It may however hold even wider importance as one of the few intact timber floating dry docks. This is the intriguing story of its history and the ongoing efforts to conserve its fabric.
