Abstract

There were a number of significant events in the story of how electricity supply was established in South Australia - the first permanent installation of electric lighting in a non-residential building; the first course in applied electrical engineering; the first accepted proposal for a street lighting scheme; the supply of power to Adelaide's first electric street light; the supply of power to Adelaide's first electricity consumer; and the formation of the company which became Adelaide's first electricity supplier. And to show we're not parochial, let's add the founding of the electricity supply company and the building of the power station which became the nucleus of New South Wales' largest regional electricity undertaking? Any one of these achievements would qualify someone for recognition as a pioneer of electricity supply but one man alone was responsible for all of these achievements. Unfortunately the story of Edward Maurice Grant has been lost to history: this paper will correct that oversight.
