Abstract

Mark Gilbert is a key member of the group charged with bringing home to Australia the historic clipper ship the City of Adelaide. The 1864 ship is the world's oldest surviving composite clipper ship, having a wooden hull and iron frames. It was built specifically to bring passengers to South Australia and to take copper, wool and other goods back to the UK. It presently sits on a slipway in Irvine near Glasgow, Scotland. The group has negotiated to take ownership and is well advanced into its plan to bring it back to SA. Mark will describe the plan for transporting this 400 tonne load from Scotland to Port Adelaide and will give an update on the latest progress with work on site.
