- Abstract
Earthquakes over the last few years have produced devastating effects around the world, causing loss of life and damage to a variety of buildings and facilities. Close to home is Newcastle (1989) and Christchurch (2011) where significant loss of life was experienced along with the destruction or damage of notable historic buildings. Although there have been very few earthquakes here in the last decade, there are major fault lines near Adelaide. Given our current understanding of earthquakes and their behaviour, we need to discover how safe and compliant our heritage buildings are to ensure we preserve their fabric and prevent loss of life. This paper presents an overview of earthquake activities from around the world with observations on their devastation and possible ways to minimise their injury and damage impacts.
