This paper is a complete description of the method of mining the brown coal deposits at Yallourn, Victoria. After a general discussion of the special features of the site, the layout of the workings, the methods and machines used in removing the coal and overburden, and the transport system, are described. The numerous ancillary services, such as the power supply to the machines, the fire-fighting apparatus, and the pumping and drainage systems, are dealt with.
