- Abstract
The type of composite slab and girder bridge described by Mr. A. W. Knight, JrIEAust., in his paper published in The Journal in January, I934, created considerable interest owing to its great economy of steel as compared with the usual type on which the concrete slab merely rests on the steel.
The methods of computation given by Mr. Knight, while making clear the stresses in the steel at successive stages of the construction, are nevertheless somewhat laborious when applied to the selection of a suitable section, as it is necessary to work through all the various stages before the final stresses in a trial section can be arrived at.
The author therefore submits the following simplified methods of computation, which enable the final stresses in a trial section to be obtained as simply as in any ordinary beam.
