- Abstract
This book outlines the career of one of Australia's leading 19th century architects, James Barnet. His buildings include Central Railway, the Australia Museum, Sydney's GPO and the now destroyed Garden Palace.
When he became Colonial Architect in 1862, his office was a tiny body as a result of English governments' indifference to the appearance of Australian cities. But by the time he retired in 1890, he had transformed Sydney into one of the great Victorian cities of the world.
