Abstract

This article of the series treats of the factors affecting consolidation of soils, and of the methods that have been adopted for measuring the various quantities. At the outset some interesting examples are quoted to illustrate the effects of consolidation, and then the matter is analysed with a view to showing how the behaviour of various soils in this respect may be ascertained. In addition to the practical aspects, the theory of soil consolidation is discussed.
