- Abstract
At a time when economy of road maintenance and reconstruction methods is of the utmost importance it is interesting to note that success is attending experiments with a relatively inexpensive method of resurfacing tar or bituminous macadam roads that have become uneven. The writer of this article has investigated the problem of restoring such roads to good condition at reasonable cost, and in collaboration with certain municipal engineers, has evolved a method which appears satisfactory. Scarifying is not required but screenings and a bituminous binder are spread and intimately mixed on the road surface by means of a "broom drag." Such a broom drag is inexpensive to construct and should prove a very useful tool in road maintenance work. This article also deals with the maintenance and re-sealing of first-class pavements, such as concrete and wood block, and with the reconstruction of sealed macadam roads after scarifying.
