- Abstract
Most progressive municipal authorities now look upon the provision of public swimming facilities almost as a necessity, but they do not always realise that this involves more than the mere construction of a suitable pool. It is essential for safeguarding of public health that proper provision be made for keeping the water clean, either by frequently changing it, or by means of filtration and chemical treatment. This article describes the modern swimming pool and filtration plant installed by the city council of Footscray, Vic. The author, who was the engineer responsible for the installation, discusses first the various forms of pollution to which a pool may be subject and the means whereby their effects may be minimised. He then proceeds to a description of the pool itself and the purification plant and its operation.
