Abstract

This is a pleasant non-technical discourse, outlining a few historical facts about road making and leading up to some points of interest about present-day roads. The author deals first with the Roman roads, showing how they opened up the country in days when communication was difficult. He next discusses roads and maintenance methods in the Middle Ages and 17th and 18th centuries, and finally describes a few interesting and amusing incidents connected with early road construction in Adelaide, South Australia.
