- Abstract
During the last decade a great deal of attention has been given to improving the design of compression-ignition oil engines, particularly in the direction of increasing the speed of revolution in order to decrease the weight per h.p. and also the cost. The goal attempted is the use of Diesel engines in place of petrol units for transport purposes, and although the high-speed Diesel is not yet perfect, there are now several excellent engines of the type on the market. In this article the author reviews the present position, explaining the salient features of modern practice in design, and discussing certain economic aspects of the application of compression-ignition engines to transport.
