Abstract

The new traffic bridge over the Brisbane river at Grey Street, which was opened in March last, is the largest vehicular traffic bridge in composite steel and concrete in the southern hemisphere. It is of the "through-rib" arch type, with three main arches of 238-ft. centres, carrying a 40-ft. roadway and two 11 ft. 9 in. footways, and the total length with approach viaducts is 1,634 ft. This article discusses the design and describes the methods used in the construction. The contractors for the erection were Messrs. M. R. Hornibrook Ltd., of Brisbane.
