- Abstract
This article gives the details of experiments on half a mile of pavement on the Princes highway east near Garfield. The section consisted of granitic sand laid on a good sub-grade, primed with either a light tar or bitumen, and sealed with bitumen using screenings as covering material. This led to the adoption of the bituminous surface treatment of granitic sand, natural soil and mixed sand-clay roads as a standard practice of the Victorian country roads board.
The operation of the mixed-in-place surfacing at Garfield is summarised as follows:- (1) Application of a bituminous "tack-coat" to the existing road surface. (2) Spreading of the aggregate. (3) The application of bituminous binder and mixing with the aggregate. ( 4) Grading to shape and consolidation of surfacing. (5) Maintenance during consolidation. (6) Sealing. Full details of materials, construction, and costs are given.
