- Abstract
This article describes the new installation for the Metropolitan Gas Co. at West Melbourne. The plant provides for the mechanical unloading of coal from colliers at the company's new river berth, for the automatic weighing and conveyance of the unloaded coal from the wharf to the crusher bins, to the housed in coal store and to the open storage yard. It also provides for the reclaiming of the coal from the yard and its transport to the crusher bins or housed-in coal store. There are two grab unloaders straddling No. 1 belt conveyor running along the wharf. This conveyor delivers to No. 2 conveyor running at right angles to the wharf. This delivers to No. 3 in the storage yard and this can deliver to the yard or into the crusher bins. For storing-out and reclaiming purposes a jib crane with grab is provided in the storage yard, travelling on a circular track. The capacity of the unloading plant is 200 tons per hour. Each unloader has a 4 c.yd. grab, and 90 operating cycles per hour are practicable, equal to a maximum capacity of up to 400 tons per hour for the two unloaders. This new plant, 90 per cent. of which is made in Australia is estimated to cost about £75,000. The whole of the structural mechanical and electrical equipment for the unloading and conveying plant will be supplied by Malcolm Moore Ltd. Mr. A. J. Longoni, consulting engineer, was responsible for the design.
