Abstract

The efficiency and economy of superheated steam compared with saturated steam for locomotives were realised abroad about eleven years ago. The author points out that if we could replace saturated steam by superheated steam in 400 of the 800 engines in use on the Victorian railways, in 25 years there would be a saving of at least £1,100,000 in coal and water. He believes that the conversion can be profitably accomplished.
