- Abstract
The Voith-Schneider propellor, which is already being extensively used for boats with power up to 700 h.p. on inland waters in Europe, possesses some points of resemblance to the Kaplan turbine. It is entirely different from the screw propellor, and possesses several advantages in efficiency and method of application. It acts as a steering as well as a propelling mechanism, and enables the vessel to be driven astern without reversing the engine or tail shaft. In this article, Mr. Michell describes the construction and action of the Voith-Schneider propellor, and gives an account of its advantages in practical application.
