- Abstract
A single span brick and masonry arch bridge over the Merri creek in the Melbourne metropolitan area was proving a dangerous bottleneck to the heavy traffic on the Heidelberg road. Accordingly the Victorian Country Roads Board decided to widen it from 29 ft. to 66 ft., including footways. The work was done by constructing a new reinforced concrete arch as a continuation of the brick arch on the downstream side, facing it with masonry taken from the original arch, so that the whole structure would be in harmony. This article describes in some detail, with drawings and illustrations, the design and construction of the widened bridge.
